Lab ‘Nature calls´

Performance artist Myriam Van Imschoot organized a one week lab on the way humans can imitate with their voice their natural surroundings.
This lab was part of her research for the new piece What Nature Says (premiere on 12 February 2015 at 20:30 at Kaaistudios). With this lab, Myriam aimed to open up her research to other performers with an interest in vocal performance, so as to create a platform of exchange.
The lab was set up as a series of meetings, which fuelled group and individual explorations and improvisations with a focus on bird calls, ‘paysage’, vocal bruitism: At the first meeting on 12 May the two bird watchers Trees De Preet and Luc Vandeghinste took the participants on an early walk to a nature spot where birds are plenty. At the next day (13 May) beatboxer Serdi Alici Faki initiated the participants in the land of beats as a way into mimickry of the post-industrial sound scape and rhythm sections. The other three days (14, 15, 16 May) were devoted to the voice-technical approach of Berlin-based voice teacher Johanna Peine, who gave special attention to the traces of animality in our voice apparatus and possibilities. Myriam Van Imschoot guided scores and improvisation structures to further explore the theme based on these encounters.
The lab was open to performers and artists with an interest in exploring the themes at hand and eager to experiment with the voice.

Performance kunstenaar Myriam Van Imschoot organiseert ter voorbereiding van haar volgende productie What Nature Says (in februari 2015 te zien in kunstencentrum BUDA) een lab rond stem en performance. In het lab onderzoekt ze wat er gebeurt als performers met hun stem de natuur nabootsen in een stedelijke omgeving. Speciaal voor Kortrijkzanen worden drie modules opengesteld voor een breder publiek:
ma 12.05.14: op stap met een birdwatcher 6:00 (am!) – 10:00: een birdwatcher neemt je mee op een vroegwandeling naar een natuurplek in de buurt van Kortrijk om vogels en hun zang te observeren. De wandeling eindigt in Kortrijk waar vogels zich ook in de stedelijke context nestelen. (Vergeet je wagen en laarzen niet!)
di 13.05.14: Beatbox! 10:00 – 12:30: Serdi Alici Faki is een gevierd beatboxer uit Gent. In deze masterclass krijg je van hem de beginselen mee van het beatboxen, met een freestyle improvisatie als hoogtepunt.
wo 14.0514: stemtechniek 10:00 – 12:30: Johanna Peine is een Berlijnse zanger, stempedagoge en techniek-lerares. In haar benadering van de stem is er aandacht voor het dier in ieder van ons.
